Rathkeale College Scholarships for 2026
A range of scholarships and financial assistance are available for students who apply to attend Rathkeale College.
Please note: all require an application, due by Friday 1 November 2025.

Other Scholarships available
ACCESS BARRIER BOARDING ALLOWANCE ($4,000 PER ANNUM)
The Access Barrier Allowance is for students who live too far from their nearest state or state-integrated school or kura to reasonably be able to travel there daily.
Students must meet all 3 of the following criteria to be considered for the Access Barrier Allowance:
- Have to travel an unreasonable distance (approximately 50kms) to the nearest state, state-integrated school or kura where the ākonga can enrol.
- The closest school transport service to get to their nearest state, state-integrated school or kura is unreasonable (approximately 15kms).
- Have to travel longer than 45 minutes one way to their nearest state, state-integrated school or kura.
MULTIPLE BARRIERS ALLOWANCE ($8,500 PER ANNUM)
The Multiple Barriers Boarding Allowance is for students who are experiencing significant difficulties in their education, across multiple areas.
Section 3 of the application for this allowance must be completed and signed by a referrer. They should be someone who can explain the barriers the student faces. There could be more than one referrer if that helps to describe the student’s situation.
The referrer must be one of the following:
- the student’s teacher
- the student’s school principal
- Oranga Tamariki
- the Police
- a social worker
- a counsellor
- a kaumatua.
All criteria must be met:
- Poor participation at school. For example, difficulty taking part in everyday classroom learning, completing schoolwork, poor attendance and not taking part in extra-curricular activities.
- Poor relationships. For example, being socially isolated, having difficulty forming relationships and friendships, and/or lacking respect for others.
- Behavioural issues. For example, being disruptive, harming others or themselves, participating in criminal activities, or having a history of stand downs, suspensions or expulsions.
- Low achievement at school in literacy, numeracy, oral language and other subjects.
- Environment. For example, lacking in family and community support, having poor or negative role models, or being exposed to physical or psychological harm. Being involved with agencies such as Police, Oranga Tamariki, or any health service.

Scholarships administered by the Māori Education Trust are available throughout all secondary school years. These scholarships include the:

Māori Education Trust Boarding Scholarship for Year 9 – Year 13 Māori students with demonstrated financial need and enrolled at a secondary boarding school

Māori Education Trust Year 9 Scholarship for Year 9 Māori students with demonstrated financial need, who require assistance with education costs

Māori Education Trust Year 12 & 13 for Year 12 and 13 Māori students with demonstrated financial need, who require assistance with education costs.

SECONDARY SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS
The scholarships are available to students studying full-time at secondary schools in Years 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13.
The amount of the scholarship is dependent on the pool of funds available and the number of applications received.
The applications must reach the Trusts office by the closing date. Due to the volume of applications late applications may not be considered.
The scholarships recipients will be announced by letter to the applicant in December and to the school in January.

LEADERSHIP AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarships are available annually, With a total pool of $8000 for secondary school students in Years 11, 12 and 13.
Applications are available from 1 February and close 31 March annually.
The scholarships are announced to the applicant and to the school annually in April.

The Mihingare (Anglican) Secondary School Scholarships are for Maori secondary school students who demonstrate financial need, leadership qualities/potential and a satisfactory educational background, and who will benefit from additional financial support for their secondary schooling. Each year, a maximum of 30 scholarships worth up to $10,000 each are offered.

The objective of the Yamada O’Regan Secondary School Scholarships is to advance Ngāi Tahu secondary school students to complete the school year and successfully attain a secondary school qualification.
Scholarship Eligibility
To be eligible for a Yamada O’Regan Secondary School Scholarship you must:
- Be a registered Ngāi Tahu member
- Be enrolled at a secondary school studying in years 10, 11, 12 or 13
- Be achieving academic success in at least three school subjects
- Be involved in whānau, hapū or iwi-related activities
- Demonstrate leadership qualities
- Be able to explain the difficulties/hardships that may prevent you from completing your current school year and or successful attainment of a secondary school qualification.
